Flag of Drogheda Awarded

Thursday, 31 May 2012 11:03 Colin

On Wednesday 30th May 2012. Members of the Division were presented with the Flag of Drogheda by Lord Mayor Kevin Callan, Councillors Frank Maher and Linda Bell Woods. The Division was delighted to except the Flag and thanked the Mayor/Councillors for visiting them.

The Mayor pointed out how the Coat of Arms was one of the oldest in the country, and explained the meaning of it:
The gate is St. Lawrence's Gate, a Norman building which still stands in the town.
The ship represents the town's status as a major trading port (hence the motto "God our strength, merchandise our glory".
The star and crescent are the royal seal of King John, who gave the town its charter, and also represent's links with Turkey, in times past. The three lions are the three English lions, Drogheda being an English garrison town, and also dates back to the crusades of the 11th century. The similarities in our histories regarding the crusades is worth noting!
